23rd THING!!!!

Nine weeks and 23 exercises later... its all come to an end. WEB 2.0 training has made me more aware of things that are currently out there in terms of web 2 technologies and applications and some of these applications have great relevance to my work and for libraries in general.
I never would have actively gone out looking for or use any of web 2 technologies and application if wasn't for this training. So this has been great!
I've completed the online survey and all its left now is the theme song for Nesian Chic courtesy of NesianMystik (of course.) Enjoy!

EBOOKS

Second to last exercise!!!
I went through and had look at netlibrary via the tutorial and it was really interesting. I then had a look on ebooks.com site where I discovered alot of my favourite books can be purchased from.... I really liked this site as it has some really new books listed on there to and its easy to navigate through it. You can spend all day browsing through this site!!!

I visited the Project Gutenburg site - WOW it's huge! They have lists of top 100 e-books as of yesterday and 7 days ago as well top authors for the same time frame. The most interesting thing on their site is part where they got list of books in other languages. Under the category of Language with up to 50 books, Maori is listed. When I clicked on it - it only comes up with one book "Hinemoa". What with the 50 books and only 1 is listed???
There are no Pacific Island languages - boo hoo! But Chinese is there under the category Language with more than 50 books. There are 320 titles!

I like there bookshelf searching tool. One can easily see at a glance what's available - very simple and easy. However Project Gutenburg sites doesn't have as many newer books as the ebooks.com site. (or am i not searching it properly??). hmmm.

Podcasts

Time is running out and there's still a bit of work to do.... aaaaagh!
Ok, PODCASTS. I've heard of it, seen it been demonstrated before but never really gone looking for interesting or any podcasts before this exercice.
Therefore as a result of this exercise I went looking for some podcasts listed on the postcastalley site as well as podcast.com. I found some library ones and have added them on to my blogline account

I also found some useful podcast sites that will come in handy for Sunday School lessons and for church activities which I've also added on to Blogline.

Online Application Tools

When it comes to ONLINE APPLICATION TOOLS- I'm like WHAT??? But after reading ALL the info about what online application tools are- 2 things came to mind: 1) yes I do actually
know what they are and 2) yes, I have used one of those tools.

Google Docs: I've used the Google Calendar tool to collate all the events that various team members are doing at their site and then uploading this information on to a blog for all to see. This is good if people remember to input their information. When it's all working well - this is great way for the customer to see what's happening around all the libraries in a day a week, a month or a year.

Zoho Writer: Created an account to use the various application offered by Zoho Writer and there are many. One that is of great interest to me is the Project Management tool... when it finaly works.

All in all there's some really cool things to do both on Google Docs and Zoho Writer. So ONLINE APPLICATION TOOLS - WRITE IT - SHARE IT - COLLABORATE

THING 17

Having had spent hours and hours (on a Saturday night!) going through Bebo, Facebook, Myspace, I now realise why I don't have a page on ANY of these social networking sites. They take up SO MUCH OF YOUR TIME!!! I don't know how people keep their pages up-to-date!

Not willing to have to create another login I decided to browse through the sites. For sites that I wanted to know more about I used hubby's login to access them..... I also talked to various friends who use these social networking sites ALOT for their opinions and reasons why they use it.

The most common answer was they use Bebo and Facebook to keep in touch with friends and families overseas. (ok, so it's nothing you or I haven't heard before...!)

Had a look at Bebo. Gosh there's lots to do there! Logged on using hubby's login and it was so busy. All these people who have sent requests to add them, do I accept, think about it or don't ask again.... and then theirs applications to be added and comments with hearts..... it just went on and on.... (I think I deleted half of hubby's requests to add.... totally by mistake of course..hehehe!)

But one good thing is that my cousins in Japan has just created a Bebo page for our upcoming family reunion- so that's cool. Everyone in the family are asked to go in and fill out their details on where they sit on the family tree. And to add any information about our great grandparents etc.... so that's pretty cool. My only problem with it is that the bebo page is public and EVERYONE CAN SEE IT!

So then I had a look at Facebook. Much more to my liking. Maybe it's the age thing! It's simple, no clutter and not as busy as Bebo. On Facebook everything in terms of layout/design is the same where as in Bebo you get to change the skin of your page.
One of features on Facebook that I found great was the ability for the user to create their own FAMILY TREE. A family tree in the true sense of the word as in a proper family tree. So definitely a feature which might be better than the current one on Bebo.

Had a look at Auckland City Libraries Bebo page as well as Tupu's page, Rotorua Library and Birmingham Public Library. Also visited the Hennepin County Library page on Facebook

Myspace was interesting. Came across some well known Samoan song artists as well as not so well known ones and some dance groups which have pages on there. I've never been to Myspace before I had to do this exercise.

All in all - this has been a good exercise, so good that I considering creating an account on one of these social networking sites. Woo hoo!

Week 9 - Discover YouTube

Ok so this exercise is out of sync with what's to follow but I thought this might be easier to do first can the social networking one....so while I'm here I'll share my favourite Samoan comedy duo - The Laughing Samoans , with you. This is Samoan humor at its best! Obviously for those of you who are viewing this on your staff computers... you won't be able to see a thing! sorry! Try your Learnet computers or Digital Services computer! LOL! Enjoy!
